Hanan al-Shaykh is a Lebanese novelist and journalist. Her novel Only In London was shortlisted for the Independent Prize for Foreign Fiction. In The Locust and the Bird: My Mother's Story (2009), al-Shakyh tells the story of her mother, a woman who broke the rules of her strict Arab society, pursuing a passionate affair with a student whilst being forced into marriage with her own brother-in-law. She is also the writer of several plays, and numerous essays on political topics affecting the world today.
