Joanna Bourke

Joanna Bourke is an historian and professor of history at Birkbeck, University of London. She describes herself as a ‘modern feminist’ and has written on Irish history, gender history, working-class culture, war and masculinity. In recent years, she has been researching the history of the emotions, particularly fear and hatred. She has also been exploring the history of sexual violence. In 2011 she published What It Means To Be Human: Reflections from 1791 to the Present.
