Louise Doughty

on her Romany family

Louise Doughty is an English novelist, playwright and journalist of Romany descent. Although many of her family stories are light-hearted, Doughty makes the case for tolerance and integration through the framework of her own family history. Her novel Whatever You Love was short-listed for the Costa award for fiction in 2010 and long-listed for the Orange Prize 2011. Apple Tree Yard was selected as a Richard & Judy Book Choice in the spring of 2014. Doughty has also presented radio programmes for the BBC on literature, and was a judge for the 2008 Man Booker Prize. She also writes radio plays.
